I saw this trend going around on social media where people are asking ChatGPT to draw a sketch style caricature of them — one that captures your personality, your work, your vibe, based on everything you've talked about with it.

This trend can tell you something about yourself…based on your chat history, how you interact with it, the things you search and what you've worked on. Just like your calendar and your spending habits can tell you something about yourself…but it can't tell you everything.

The biggest risk with this right now is how easy it could be for people to fall into the trap of turning to AI for things they should be going to God for.

That's spiritual laziness, and I don't want to see Kingdom people getting lazy, by making AI their default source of truth or using it as a shortcut to spiritual growth.

God is the one and only source of truth…and AI can not replace God.

What else do we call it when people choose to go to another source, rather than God? Idolatry. Anytime we position someone or something ahead of God, or surrender his place in our life to something else. That is idolatry.

It's no different than the children of Israel looking to a golden calf for guidance instead of going to the real God who delivered them from Egypt. You can read it in Exodus 32. Moses goes up the mountain. He was only gone for 40 days, and during that time they panicked, demanded that Aaron build a golden calf so that "god" would be present with them.

Moses came back down the mountain and found them worshipping this golden statue of an animal. 40 days. That's all it took for them to build this false god to replace the real God…

They wanted something convenient, something they could see, something they could touch and control. That was a bad decision on their part…and if you remember, it didn't turn out very well for them.

Back to AI…

As Kingdom people how do we handle this? There are redemptive ways we can use AI and leverage it to help us expand the Kingdom. But we have to be very careful and discerning with how we do it…

We use it as a tool to do things better, faster, more efficiently, while remembering it's not a replacement. Not a replacement for God, and not a replacement for human creativity and brilliance.

The best questions we can ask as Kingdom people are…

  • How do we leverage AI as this incredible tool that it is and use it in the most redemptive way possible to help us expand the Kingdom and bring people closer to the real God?
  • How can we guard ourselves from allowing AI to become the "golden calf" of our generation?

Just don't take it as a source of truth for your identity. Keep God your main source of truth about your identity and who you are…
